Lexington Children’s Theatre is hosting a weeklong workshop for children ages 8-12.
During the week, students received a script, auditioned for roles and spend the week learning their lines and stage placement.
Rhonda Bell, a resident teaching artist for Lexington Children’s Theatre, said the camp is a chance not only to perform but also to teach students more about theater and its process.
This year campers are working on “Matilda,” a story about a young girl with an “extra, extra, extra, ordinary brain,” who learns she can do more than most and uses her newfound ability to save the day.
Bell said camps like this are essential because it helps children get involved with the arts.
“A lot of times there are not a lot of opportunities for the arts, whether it be theater, music, etcetera, for young people in small communities to be a part of, so we have brought a program from a bigger community and brought it to them, so they are able to participate and join,” Bell said.
The weeklong camp began Monday and will hold its final performance at 4:30 p.m. Friday at the Leeds Center for the Arts. The event is free and open to the public.
