Community Education has July meeting

The meeting was called to order by Greg Yates, Community Education coordinator.
Members present were Kent Coogle (FRC), Charlie Pasley (Clark Energy), Deputy County Judge-Executive Janet Townsend (Fiscal Court), Michael Smith (Franklin Ave Church of the Living God), Derek Mastin (Catalent), Gordon Parido (CCPS Board member), Angela Bereznak (Health Department), Kirsten Petrey (MurrayPetrey CPA), Deborah Jackson (Parks and Recreation), Sarah Alexander (CRMC) and Grissom Yates (GRC student).
The meeting was chaired by Yates.
Members not present were Mike Caldwell (Winchester Sun), Bruce Manley (BCTC), Mayor Ed Burtner (City of Winchester), Debbie Fatkin (CCCS) and Cindy Banks (Chamber of Commerce).
After introductions, Yates explained milestones that had occurred since the last meeting in May.
He asked for suggestions from the group about ways to improve the website and he also reminded everyone to like and share the Facebook page.
Yates will start posting class information on Facebook and the website once closer to September.
For the sake of the new members, Yates explained how the process works to produce and distribute the catalog.
After explaining what classes would be offered in the fall, two members offered suggestions for new classes starting in the spring. Yates asked them to send him class ideas for the spring as he has already started a list of potential new classes.
Yates reminded everyone they can email him flyers about upcoming events and he will share with his non-profit email list as well as members of the Advisory Council.
Yates will be helping John Lennon (GRC YSC) with the fall College and Career Fair.
Michael Smith asked about program funding.
Greg then asked for the members to share anything important happening with their organization.
Jackson is hosting two free community events over the next two Saturdays.
Alexander (CRMC) said the new CEO for the hospital is getting to know the community speaking to different civic groups.
Pasley hired four new linemen recently and they are going through training.
Smith is hosting a Revival next week.
Mastin shared that Catalent just completed their summer plant shutdown and they just hired 20 new employees.
Parido reminded that school starts Aug. 14, and GRC will host their first home game in the new football stadium Sept. 6. He provided an update on all the new facilities at GRC. Groups can ask Paul Christy for tours.
Townsend reminded everyone about the various road paving projects that will be going on in the county over the next few months. The fiscal court is starting the process for non-profits to apply for funds from the Clark County Fiscal Court Community Foundation.
Coogle reminded everyone about the Readifest July 26 hosted at BCTC.
Bereznak said the health department always has classes on Smoking Cessation which is an 8-week course and is looking for participants.
The next meeting will be Sept. 18.
