Speed limit changes in area of Bypass Road

Motorists will have to slow down to stay legal on Bypass Road after the speed limit was lowered between Colby Road and Boonesboro Road.

State rep. Les Yates said new signs went up Thursday lowering the speed limit on that section from 55 to 45 mph.

“Personally, I always thought that speed limit was way too high out there,” Yates said. “Through the years, I’ve seen several fatalities there.”

Residents made the suggestion to get the speed limit lowered, especially since several new businesses are building on that end of the road, he said.

Yates talked to officials with the state department of highways, because Bypass Road is a state road, who went through their process.

“They had to do a traffic study,” Yates said.

The study, Yates said, determined the speed limit was too high with the amount of traffic and congestion on Bypass Road.

The entire process took a couple months, he said.

“Maybe it will help,” he said.
