A Bath County man was killed early Tuesday morning when his dump truck crashed on Interstate 64.

Garry D. Shrout, 63, of Salt Lick, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash near the 100 mile marker, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

Shrout was driving a 1981 Chevrolet Dump truck in the eastbound lanes around 12:39 a.m. Tuesday. Witnesses said one of the truck’s tires apparently failed and disintegrated. The truck then crossed the median and the westbound lanes before it crashed into an embankment.

Deputies noted Shrout was already deceased when they reached the scene. No one else was in the truck and no other vehicles were involved.

Two sections of tire tread were found in the median, which deputies said was consistent with the witnesses’ accounts.

Shrout was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, according to the accident report.
