Pioneer Festival kicks off Friday

In only three days, the 41st annual Daniel Boone Pioneer Festival begins with a weekend full of arts, crafts, music and more.

Long-time festival organizer Kitty Strode said the festival continues with its proven formula: live music and dancing Friday night, two days of arts and crafts vendors in College Park and more live music Sunday night at Lykins Park.

“It’s unbelievable,” Strode said recently. “We have been very fortunate to be supported by this community.”

One of the biggest parts of the festival is the arts and crafts, which will fill College Park for two days. Elizabeth Chalfant of the Winchester Art Guild said more than 130 vendors will be there with a variety of items have signed up this year, including 40 who have never been to the Pioneer Festival before.

New vendors this year will bring everything from signs made from pallet wood, leather work, jewelry, metal art and many others, she said.

Elsewhere around the park will be food vendors, including  some local groups, as well as a petting zoo and train rides for the children.

Parking, though, is at a premium around the park. For several years, the festival has offered shuttle service from Campbell Junior High School on Boone Avenue to the park. Strode said the free shuttles will run throughout Saturday and Sunday.

College Park will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Saturday also includes the local talent contest, which begins at 12:30 p.m. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and costs $10 to enter.

Sunday morning starts with a church service at 8 a.m. hosted by Calvary Christian Church.

On Sunday night, everything moves across town to Lykins Park on Mount Sterling Road for an evening of live music followed by fireworks.

This year’s lineup, which Strode called “really strong,” is headlined by country group Runaway June. Opening acts are Rifletown, a country-rock band, and bluegrass band The Wooks.
