GRC students recognized by Youth Salute

Forty-five students from George Rogers Clark High School are among the 873 high school juniors from 53 high schools in Central Kentucky recognized in this year’s “Youth Salute.”

The 39th annual awards ceremony was held in their honor Sunday, May 5, at Georgetown College. 

Students were nominated by teachers, guidance counselors and principals for this year’s Youth Salute.

To qualify, the student had to be a junior (senior class of 2020), have a 3.0 GPA or better and have held at least two  leadership roles to which they were chosen by their peers or an adult leader within the past two years in school, religious or community sponsored organizations.

The Sun will feature several students each week.

Charity Bowen

Charity is the soprano section leader for the Cardinal Singers choir. She is a member of the International Thespians Society, for which she is secretary. She is a member of the GRC track team, Spanish Club and National Honor Society. She is head of charities for Cairn Coffee House and an intern at Rocco’s Coffee Roastery. She volunteers at Calvary Christian Church as an iMac and lighting technician. She also attended EKU Choral Day.

Charlize O’Dell

Charlize is a member of National Beta Club, GRC Fine Arts Cohort, EKU Now, Cardinal Singers, Winchester Players, the cross country team and National Honor Society. She volunteers for Special Olympics. She danced for the Diana Evans School of Dance, and is a member of the Leeds Center for the Arts Youth Advisory Board, for which she is secretary.

She plans to double major in drama and business.

Clay Comer

Clay earned his Eagle Rank as a member of the Boy Scouts of America Troop 56. He is a member of the 4-H State Teen Council. He is a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church youth group. He serves at co-chair of the service committee for the 4-H District 4 Teen Council, junior leader for the Clark County 4-H Outdoor Adventure Club and an officer for the Clark County 4-H Leadership Club. He is a member of the Clark County 4-H Shooting Sports trap team, the GRC academic team and the tennis team. He is also part of the Kentucky Youth Assembly.

He plans to attend at college at a Kentucky public university and is exploring a career in the medical field.

Delaney Mitchell

Delaney is a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club, Christian Fellowship Club, EKU Now, and the Calvary Christian Church youth group. She volunteers as an escort for Jesus Prom, the childcare team for Calvary Christian Church and Calvary recovery program. She was also a member of the GRC soccer team for 2016-17 and 2017-18.

She plans to major in pediatric dentistry.

Destiny Napier

Destiny is a member of the GRC track team, Leeds Youth Advisory Board, GRC basketball team and the GRC Fine Arts Cohort. She is also involved with the GRC school musical set production team. She acts for Winchester Players and Leeds Center for the Arts, and was a part of the production team for “Outside Our Doors.”

Emily Abner

Emily is a member of the Health Occupations Students of America, National Honor Society and Leadership Advisory. She is an assistant gymnastics coach at Thoroughbred Gymnastics. She is an honor roll student and works as a babysitter. She is a recreation leader for vacation Bible school, and does creative ministry theme interpretations using American Sign Language to music. She is also an assistant Bible drill leader.

She plans to major in nursing at Eastern Kentucky University.

Emma Taylor

Emma is a Beta Club member and sports editor for Smoke Signals, the GRC school newspaper. She is exercise leader for the GRC cross country/outdoor track/indoor track. She leads Bible study for the GRC cross country team. She volunteers for the Daniel Boone Pioneer Festival 5K. At Calvary Christian Church, she volunteers for Jesus Prom, in the nursery and attended a mission trip to New York City.

Emma plans to attend Morehead State University to major in pre-dentistry, followed by dental school.

Felicia Rapp

Felicia serves at Calvary Christian Church. She is a Girl Scout cadet. She is a member of the Beta Club and National Honor Society. She is a principal’s award nominee and earned Honor Roll. She is a member of Cards for Paws and the archery team.

She plans to study business and English at Eastern Kentucky University.

Glory Ferrell

Glory is flute section leader for the GRCHS marching band. She is first chair for two years for the GRC symphonic band. She also performs with the school’s pep and jazz bands. She was selected for the University of Kentucky’s honor’s band. She won the sophomore visual performance award. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Bourbon Street Cruisers Car Club. At Grace Bible Church, she a children’s church teaching assistant and a member of the youth group. She is also part of the EKU dual credit program.

Gracen Rogers

Gracen is the Clark County FFA Chapter chaplain and committee chairman. She is also a member of the Clark County Cattleman’s Association. She is a member of Bethlehem Christian Church. She judges in the dairy contest and does prepared public speaking. She won the outstanding achievement award in FFA and attended the fall and spring delegate meetings.
