AARP Chapter 632 met Tuesday, Aug. 27, at the James B. Allen Generations Center with Sue Staton presiding. There were 24 members and guests present.

Elizabeth Gay opened the meeting with prayer. The group sang “Happy Birthday” to Glyness Everett, and then Rosmarie Smith was welcomed back after her absence because of illness.

Mary Williamson addressed the attendees regarding Alzheimer’s disease. She said there is an Alzheimer’s Association on Palumbo Drive in Lexington.

Alzheimer’s was first identified by German psychiatrist and pathologist Alois Alzheimer in 1906. It is currently the sixth leading cause of death.

Mary distributed Alzheimer’s information pamphlets and informed everyone of an Alzheimer’s support group meeting the second Monday each month at First United Methodist Church, 204 S. Main St.

Jim Bennett, director of operations at the local McDonald´s, announced McDonald’s is happy to employ senior citizens. They are dependable and can work part time, he said.

Don Rose warned of a scam currently being perpetrated in which you may be offered a free DNA test. Oftentimes, the scammer may claim to work for Medicare and ask for your Medicare and Social Security numbers. Many senior citizens have been targeted in this scam that uses DNA tests to defraud Medicare or steal personal information.

Colista Ledford read the secretary’s report and Joyce Reffett presented the treasurer’s report.

The next AARP meeting will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, at the James B. Allen Generations Center, 32 Meadow St.
