GRC girls soccer beats Henry Clay, 2-1

After falling to one of the state’s top teams, West Jessamine, earlier in the week, the George Rogers Clark girls soccer team looked to bounce back in another matchup against a tough opponent, Henry Clay.

The game was the first soccer game played on the field at GRC’s athletic complex.

The low-scoring affair started off slow, with neither team able to capture a goal until Shelby Vaughn got the ball to Delaney Manning for a GRC goal as the first half came to an end.

The Lady Cardinals were able to take that one-goal lead into the break and needed to play solid defense to come back home with a quality win.

Halfway through the second half, the Blue Devils were able to get on the board to tie it up at 1-1.

Needing a goal to win the game, the Cardinals were looking to score quickly.

That they did, responding with a goal of their own just five minutes later. Ciana Araya found Leslie Hernandez and Hernandez found the back of the net.

The Cards took their 2-1 lead and didn’t look back, winning the game by that margin.

The win vaulted the Cards into first place in the 10th Region, where they look to repeat as champions for the fourth year in a row.

GRC is back in action Wednesday night when they travel to Bourbon County to take on the 4-5-0 Lady Colones in a 10th Region matchup.

The game is set to kick off at 7:30 p.m.
