Man killed after being struck by train

Officials are investigating the death of a Clark County man after he was struck by a train Thursday afternoon along Two Mile Road.

Clark County Sheriff Berl Perdue Jr. said 31-year-old Zachary Burgess was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The engineer said he saw something on the tracks,” Perdue said. “He thought it was an an animal on the track. He hit the horn a couple times. (The person) sat up, then he lay back down.”

The train, comprised of two engines and four cars, could not stop in time before the collision.

Toxicology results are pending, he said.

Perdue said there were no witnesses, and Burgess was far down the tracks from the nearest crossing.

The incident was reported around 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

Clark County firefighters also responded to the incident.
