If you could travel back to any time period in American history, what time period would you pick and why? What would you do?
—Loretta Ritchie: “Back in the ‘40s when I was a little kid living in the country, climbing hills, wading creeks, drinking water out of a dipper and making mud pies. We had no electricity only a lamp and when darkness came the lamp went out we couldn’t afford to keep it burning. The moon shining through the windows left open for fresh air and off to bed to hear the night sounds coming in from off the creek, it was a good life for a little kid.”
— Vince Britton “I’d want to go back to the 80s so I could see my granny and my aunt again who have passed on, and because of the amazing music and all the fun things people did before the digital age! Second, I’d love to go back to the 1950s or 60s, so I could experience the thrill of the space race to the moon, the kinder manners and more camaraderie people seemed to enjoy, and because it was a very dynamic, innovative time!”
— Brian Elligson: “I’d go back to the Renaissance. Mostly for the arts.”
— Dot Flora: “The 1950s. We had come through the depression and a world war, Winchester peacefully integrated schools. Families were basically strong, children could play outside, schools were safe. Higher education and medical care were more affordable. There was not as great a divide economically and there was opportunity to advance. It was not a perfect time but you could disagree without being so disagreeable.’
— Kaylee Christopher: “The 80s , when times were a little more simple. Kids could play outside all day until dark without worry of someone stealing them. When we still wrote letters to each other or called each other on a landline. When we could enjoy time out and about without cellphones interrupting conversations.”
— Mary Christopher Grogan: “The 90s, in high school again, but with what I know now.”
— Craig Caudill: “I would travel back to the early years of this country. We made a decision to go towards a capitalist focused government and way as espoused by Andrew Jackson, and away from an agrarian focused one as suggested by Thomas Jefferson. Quite frankly I thought they were both right and we should have taken a more balanced approach. Capitalism has proven to be what has made us a wonderful country to thrive in. One which helps support other countries throughout the world with defense, supplies and other support. I am in huge support of capitalism for that reason. BUT, I think that Jefferson’s model, which was soundly defeated, is worthy of consideration now. I think we should have taken a marked focus on the natural resources we have here and help to sustain and positively impact them along with building a wealthy nation along with it. I think we mostly focus on capitalism which tend to be self-centric, rather than an agrarian one that tends to be more outwardly focused and community oriented.”
