A Winchester couple pleaded guilty to cruelty to animal charges Monday, more than a year after malnourished animals were found in their home.
Holly Lankford Brandenburg and Phillip Scott Brandenburg Jr. both pleaded guilty to second-degree cruelty to animals Monday in Clark District Court, a day before they were scheduled to be tried.
Holly Brandenburg was sentenced to 360 days in jail, with 180 days conditionally discharged. Phillip Brandenburg was sentenced to 360 days, but was allowed to serve 358 days on home incarceration with work release.
Both were ordered to pay restitution including $1,789 in veterinary fees for the animals taken from their home.
According to court records, Clark County Animal Shelter Director Adreanna Wills said she found several animals in poor health at 140 Linden Lane on Sept. 1, 2018, while she was following up on a neighbor’s complaint about abandoned animals.
In court documents, shelter employees said they found four dogs and a cat in emaciated condition with discharge from their eyes and noses. One dog was standing, but the others appeared incapable of doing so. The cat was locked in a small cage with no food or water.
The floor of the house was covered in feces and urine, Wills wrote in the complaint.
At the time, Wills said the animals were severely malnourished and near death.
