Dec. 3, 1969

— A Winchester soldier has received posthumously the Silver Star Medal, third highest award given by this country for combat action. Cpl. Bobby Gene Newby, son of Mrs. Chester Newby, earned the award for action in Vietnam May 18, 1969, the date of his death.

Dec. 8, 1969

— Speech students at George Rogers Clark High School won three superiors in a speech tournament at Lexington Henry Clay High School. Capturing superiors were Scotty Street, impromptu speaking; Vanessa Oaks, prose; and Doug Miller, extemporaneous speaking.

Dec. 3, 1999

— You’ve read abou it. You’ve talked about it. You’ve probably worried about it. Now it’s time to live it. With only 27 days left before 1999 ends and a new year begins, it’s down to the wire. What exactly will happen when the clock rolls over from 11:59 p.m. Dec. 31 to 12 a.m. Jan. 1, 2000? No one is sure. But everyone is making final preparations.

Dec. 4, 1999

— It was the last inauguration of the century, the first inauguration of a two-term governor in more than 200 years and among those joining the celebration were seven former governors and the GRCHS Marching Band. It was the band’s second inaugural performance for Gov. Paul Patton, having marched in Patton’s first inaugural parade in 1995.
