For its 35th year, organizers of the annual Unity breakfast and march want to add a little emphasis to the march itself.

This year, the event will begin with the march at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at the Clark County Courthouse. The group will then walk up Main Street to the gym at St. Joseph Catholic Church for the breakfast and program.

Winchester-Clark County Unity Committee member Sandy Stults said the breakfast usually attracts about 200 people, but far fewer were participating in the march itself. In addition to inviting churches and other groups to participate this year, organizers thought flipping the schedule would help as well.

The breakfast and program, held on the observance of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, usually incorporates music and performances along with speakers.

“We’ll have some singing and music,” Stults said. “Our keynote speaker is Ronda Simmons. She’s one of my former students and she’s a producer at channel 36.”

The committee will also present its annual humanitarian award. The winner will be announced at the breakfast, Stults said.
