Lula Venters Mullins, 94, widow of Willis Mullins passed away in her home under the care of Hospice Thursday, June 19 at 11:35pm. Mrs. Mullins was born on March 27, 1926 to the late Wallace and Ida Venters of Pine Top, KY.

Mrs. Mullins, affectionately called “Miss Lou” graduated from Caney Junior College, now Alice Lloyd College, and Eastern Kentucky University. She was 18 years old when she began her teaching career, upon signing a promissory note to complete her Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Her first teaching opportunity was at Neely Elementary School (1944) in Knott County. John Filson Elementary School (1960-1963), in Jefferson County, was her next position. She then returned to her hometown of Hindman to teach at Carr Creek Elementary (1964-1968). “Miss Lou” and her family moved to Winchester in 1968 and she began teaching at Becknerville Elementary (1968) and then went on to Central Elementary (1969-1982). At that time, she retired her position with the Clark County Public School System. Miss Lou had such a love for teaching that she went on to teach at Saint Agatha Elementary School (1982-1985). The next several years she worked with the children at Little Learners. She returned to the public-school system to substitute teach and work as a Reading Interventionist. Mrs. Mullins served as a principal for Clark County Christian School (2000-2001) followed by a year of teaching Kindergarten for the same school. She returned to the Clark County School System as an interventionist (2003-2008) to complete her career in education. The entire time “Ms. Lou” lived and worked in Clark County she tutored thousands of children out of her home. Teaching was her life-long passion.She was a member of Central Baptist Church Winchester, KY. She loved going to church and was an active member of Gail Blakeman’s Sunday School class.

Mrs. Mullins is survived by her daughter Kimberly Mullins Kerr of Winchester, two granddaughters, Jessica (Zach) Kerr Ernst of Lexington, Emilee (Shane) Kerr Fidler of Summerville, SC; two great grandchildren, Ava Katherine Ernst and Wynn Pendleton Fidler. Mrs. Mullins is also survived by her much loved children gained by marriage EJ (Ann) Mullins of Lexington, Flo (John) Reese Shelbyville, Dean Mullins of Lexington, Bill (Nancy) Mullins of Nicholasville, Freida Lear of Nicholasville and Terry Murphy of Alexandria, VA. Mrs. Mullins was also blessed to have many loving nieces and nephews.

She was proceeded in death by five brothers: Claude Venters, Curt Venters, Luther Venters, Fred Venters, Jim Venters and three sisters: Olly Keen, Persa Combs, and Nancy Lee. Public graveside visitation will be held at Winchester Cemetery on Tuesday, June 23 from 10:00-11:00AM. A private graveside family service will follow at 11:00AM. Services will be led by Pastor Kevin Parido, a beloved family friend. Scobee Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers will be Zach Ernst, Shane Fidler, Lee Kerr II, Lee Kerr III, Ronald Parido, and Mike Rogers. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of Gail Blakeman’s Sunday School class.
