Traditionally, Labor Day is when general election campaigns begin their last big push to the finish.

Better Together Winchester is running a campaign of its own, but it isn’t to benefit a particular candidate or party. They’re registering people to vote.

“Today, we’ve registered a few people, and we’ve given other people a little yellow slip with the website and the clerk’s number if they want an absentee ballot,” volunteer Sabrina Puckett said. “I also gave two guys the website for the restoration of voting rights.”

The first website she mentioned, GoVoteKY.com, is the state government’s voter information portal, where people can register to vote, request a mail-in ballot, find out where their polling locations are and see who’s on the ballot Nov. 4.

The number for the Clark County Clerk’s Office is 859-745-0280, ext. 3 for those who want to request a ballot or ask a question.

Better Together Winchester, which grew out of the community’s 2017 Harwood Institute for Public Innovation study, promotes racial reconciliation and is nonpartisan, said Mark McCammish, the other volunteer who was working Thursday.

McCammish said this isn’t the first election-related activity the group has done in the past three years. One year it had a voter forum, and another time it did a town hall meeting.

But this is the first time they’ve done a voter registration drive.

Puckett and McCammish had a table set up at Clark County Community Services on Taylor Avenue, where they would ask people who were waiting on donated food whether they were registered to vote, and if not, if they would like to be.

“We’ve focused on those getting food because, many times, they aren’t registered, but we’ve found a whole lot of registered voters,” Puckett said, so they have helped them apply for absentee ballots and other voting-related issues.

They’re only out there in front of Community Services, 30 Taylor Ave., when it is open for food distribution, which this week is Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The last day to register to vote for the Nov. 4 election is Oct. 5.
