The 13th annual Friends of the Poor Walk will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at College Park.

The walk is sponsored by the Winchester conference of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, which is one of the oldest and most effective charitable organizations in the world.

The Friends of the Poor Walk takes place each year nationwide, to support local projects run by many of the 4,400 conferences in the U.S.

The Winchester conference at St. Joseph parish uses the funds raised to stock their food pantry, which serves 60 to 90 families each month.

Last year, with the efforts of more than 30 walkers, more than $22,000 was raised.

Rich Gomez, walk co-chairman, said he hopes to have a successful walk this year but advises participants to wear a mask and check with state and local guidelines on how many people are to be allowed in mass gatherings.

Should the event be canceled, Gomez said, walk volunteers will be asked to engage in virtual walks where they walk in their neighborhoods or on their treadmills.

The keynote speaker at this year’s walk will be Deacon Ron Allen of St. Joseph’s parish.

People can show up at College Park or go online (https://www.fopwalk.org/event/2551) to donate or register for the walk.

Walkers will be given a free T-Shirt courtesy of Cargill, Inc.

Cupcakes will be provided by Cupcake Apothecary and coffee by The Daily Grind.
