The Clark County Board of Education said goodbye to two of its members who will be leaving office at the end of the year, Gordon Parido and Scott Hisle.

Both chose not to run for re-election this year.

Chair Ashley Ritchie offered her appreciation to the two during the last regular meeting of 2020.

She said Parido’s background in education and administration had been invaluable, and that he had been a help to her and other members. He had also provided them “so many laughs,” sometimes at their expense and often at “his own expense,” she said.

Her comments about Hisle were mostly complimentary, but also brought up differences they’ve had over the years, including his decision to nominate every other member “including himself,” to be board chair when she was elected to that position, but he has since been encouraging.

“Four years ago, I don’t think any of us were prepared for what we were going to get” when Hisle was elected, she said. “I’m going to miss Scott because he has pushed me — not just my buttons — but he has pushed me to always be better.”

Hisle was elected in 2016 in a close race, and Parido has been on the board since 2015, when he was first appointed to fill a vacancy. Both have chaired the board in the past couple of years.

Ritchie said she didn’t know what direction their lives would take, but she wished them both well.

“I would like to thank you both … for everything that you have helped accomplish. You all are more appreciated than you will ever know,” she said.

Superintendent Paul Christy also commended and thanked the two outgoing members.

In the past five years, he said, the school district has been through many changes, most of them positive, and some that probably wouldn’t have come to pass “if you all hadn’t been here,” he said.

“There have been some differences at times, some rough patches, but I think those differences have really challenged us to grow,” he said. “Thank you for your help and your work.”

Hisle said he appreciated “working with everybody” and for their patience with him, and he said he enjoyed being part of accomplishing so much during his time on the board. He thanked the others for all they had done as well.
