Melvin Howard, 88

Melvin Howard, widower of Virginia Stephens Howard, passed away on Feb. 12, 2021, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. He was 88. Born December 29, 1932, in Salyersville, Ky., he was the son of Estell and Gladys Ward Howard.

Melvin was a member of Clintonville Christian Church where he served as Sunday school teacher, deacon, and Elder Emeritus. Melvin was a retired elementary principal. He was principal at Pilot View and Trapp Elementary Schools. He was also a member of the Clark County Retired Teachers Association. Melvin was a former member of the Winchester Planning and Zoning Committee for a number of years. He was also an Army Veteran and licensed tank operator.

Melvin is survived by one daughter, Donna (Mark) Hewson, one son, Harold (Sheila) Howard. Three grandchildren: Allen (Katie) Hewson, Ashley (Hubert) Ballard, and Austin (Sarah) Howard. Great-grandchildren: Tatum Ann and Kennedy Mae Howard, Lillian Steele Hewson, Jacob, and Jacqueline Ballard. Melvin is also survived by two brothers: Loyd (Kay) Howard of Winchester, and Jerry (Sarah) Howard of Salyersville, KY. He is survived by three sisters: Betty (Robert) Barnett of Salyersville, Ky, Mary Sue (Hetzel) Dyer of Ypsilanti, Mich., and Linda (Harold) Montgomery of Salyersville, Ky. He is also survived by one aunt, Alice Howard, of Mt. Sterling, Ky. In-laws, Denzil (Allene) Stephens of Jacksonville, FL, and Clinton Stephens of Port Clinton, Ohio. He is also survived by numerous cousins, and a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, Melvin was preceded by his brother, Estell Howard, Jr. and sister-in-law, Etha Howard, and nephews, Edison and Rick Howard.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2021, at Scobee Funeral Home by Rev. Chuck Kemp. Burial will be in the Winchester Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
