It’s Baseball season in Kentucky, and the GRC baseball Cards opened this one in style.
The first pitch in baseball is a yearly tradition, and this year it was even more remarkable in their brand new facility. Clark County Schools Superintendent Paul Christy and District Athletic Director Jaime Keene threw out the co-first pitches this year to signal the start of a new season. A large crowd was present to witness history in the making, and to their delight, both men easily cleared the plate.
The stands were adorned with balloons, the senior banners hung, welcoming the fans as the bleachers filled. Dave Scalf, the voice of the baseball Cards, took the microphone to announce festivities. The team took the time to honor last year’s senior class before moving on to close the past and look to the future.
Whitley County joined the Cards on the field as the anthem played and rosters were announced. Both teams played a solid first few innings, with the Cardinals slowly inching ahead.
Freshman Brady Davis controlled the mound as the first official pitcher in the new facility. In the top of the seventh, Whitley County scored a quick two runs to tie the contest. The Cards were unable to answer, bringing the game into the 8th inning. During the 8th, Whitley county exploded for six runs, ending the game and taking home the win.
GRC now stands 0-2 for the season. The Cards are at home again on Tuesday against Bourbon County.
