The GRC Lady Cards softball team held the inaugural Jerry Puckett showcase this past weekend at the Lady Cards’ new home.
Three fields were in play across the county, with 16 teams entering the mix in hopes of bringing home the trophy.
Long-time coach of the Lady Cards, Jerry Puckett, is honored annually since his passing in 2016, but this is the first year of a tournament bearing his name. Jerry’s coined phrase “Bring your top hand to the ball and drive it” could be seen in multiple places around the event. He shared his love of coaching with his son, Matt, who now coaches the GRC baseball team. The Puckett family was honored during the event and was seen multiple times handing out awards.
“Thanks to everyone who came out and supported the event. Dad would have loved it and looked down with a smile,” said Matt Puckett.
Those of us who knew them both can see many of Jerry’s characteristics carried on through his son.
This tournament was made possible by sponsors and the blessing of a new athletic complex, lending more venues to support enough teams, something not possible in earlier years. With a bit of work and many new memories, GRC is sure to be the host of many events to come.
