For more than 20 years, the Pink Ribbon Partners have decorated the front and back steps of the Clark County Courthouse with ribbons.

The group of survivors did it again on Friday in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to also serve as a reminder to be vigilant about the disease.

“So they will pay attention to their bodies and check for breast cancer,” organization member Charlotte Richardson said. “To be sure to have a mammogram every year.”

Besides hanging ribbons to spread awareness, the organization is rooted in providing support.

“It was to get ladies together who had breast cancer,” said Cathy Gatson about the idea for the organization. “It’s a sisterhood. If you’ve gone through cancer, and if there is somebody who comes in and everything, there will be somebody in the organization that’s gone through it and can sort of tell you what you are going to go through.”

The organization has a lunch meeting at Blue Isle Home-Style Restaurant and Bar in Winchester on the second Thursday of each month, starting at 12:30 p.m.

“We usually don’t talk about breast cancer,” said Ada Rash. “We talk about everything else in the world and just have a good time. If you want to talk about breast cancer, we will.”

Richardson said the organization is looking for other women to join them.

“I know that there are plenty of them out there who have had the same problems that we’ve had, and we’d love for them to come and spend time with us,” she said.
