Clark County students will have an extra two days of Thanksgiving Break, thanks to one of their own.

The Clark County Schools Board of Education voted to revise the school calendar on Monday to include Nov.22 and 23 as part of the holiday break. The modified schedule now consists of a shortened winter break made where Jan. 3 is the first day back for students, and May 17 is now a teacher work day.

The proposal was made by its student representative, Warren Harris.

“Myself, looking in the mirror, and looking at the teachers and my friends were are all a little bit more exhausted at this point than we usually would be,” Harris said to the Board.

Harris said he believed that students are fatigued by a full-time school schedule after “being home” for close to a year.

To make sure the measure had broad support, Harris said he reached out to the district’s Kentucky Education Association representative for feedback. The idea received universal praise from teachers at all district schools.

Another reason Harris gave for the measure was holiday travel.

“If student’s families have plans to travel, they won’t come to school,” he said and cited attendance statistics from district officials that attendance is low on the days before the break.

The voting members of the Board agreed that the proposal was an excellent idea. Board Chair Ashely Ritchie remarked that it was a shame that Harris could not vote for his proposal.
