Socks will likely not fall on the top of most Christmas wish lists.

The exception to that is homeless shelters, especially during the winter months.
“It is, from what we understood, the number one requested item in the winter for homeless shelters,” said Shelly Saffran. “In the winter, people are walking a lot, they are trying to stay warm, they are more mobile, and they wear their socks out.”

Saffran is the vice president of operations for a real estate company, Coldwell Banker McMahan.
The company’s Winchester branch donated over 300 new and gently used pairs of socks to the Clark County Homeless Coalition on Dec. 16.

The seemingly random need appealed to the office.

“The reason we wanted to do socks is that it kind of seems like an unusual thing. There are so many coat drives, and a lot of people do that during this time of the year. We thought, ‘Let’s find out what they really need,’” Saffran said.

The Winchester office also provided some holiday cheer for the residents of the Fountain Circle Care & Rehabilitation Center.

“They have a Christmas tree and reach out to the nursing home to get the wish lists of all the senior citizens,” Saffran said.

The office reached out to the community to come into the office and sponsor a senior’s wish list.

The donations were part of a more extensive holiday outreach program by the company’s four central Kentucky offices.

“We decided to a CBM Five Days of Christmas. They are always looking for ways to give back to the community. Our agents are really invested in better not only homeownership but the community as a whole,” Saffran said.

Every day during the week of Dec. 13-17, CBM donated to a different charity across the area.

It donated pet items to the Madison County Humane Society, spices and flavorings to the A.M.E.N. House in Georgetown, and 150 coats to the Lexington Mission House.

The best part to Saffran is how the company’s giving inspired others in the community to do so.

“The thing that we always like with promoting our charity events and sponsorships it’s like a ripple effect,” she said. “When you see others doing good things, it starts a chain reaction, and that’s another great thing for communities.”
