Severe storms brought heavy rain, flooding and road closures to portions of Clark County over the weekend.

Heavy rains washed over the area for most of Saturday.

The New Year’s Day storm system caused severe flash flooding in southern and eastern parts of the state and spawned at least four reported tornadoes in the west.

Gov. Andy Beshear declared a State of Emergency on Saturday due to a powerful severe weather system generating heavy rain, thunderstorms, tornadoes, hail, and strong straight-line winds impacting much of Western, Eastern, and South Central Kentucky.

By late Sunday night, the National Weather Service office in Louisville estimated that the Kentucky River at Ford Lock would crest at 25.5 feet, just under the thresh hold for flood stage.

Monday, Clark County Road Department Department reported on its Facebook page early Sunday afternoon that Four Mile Road, Jackson Ferry Road and Ferry Road were closed to thru traffic due to flooding.

The road department’s post also said that other road closures would be possible during the early part of the week.

The river is anticipated to crest tonight around 7 p.m. at a little over 26’ which meets the flood stage. Allan Curtis, superintendent of the Clark County Road Department, said crews will most likely be scraping those roads Tuesday morning and checking for damage.

“Other than a few trees that were knocked down over the weekend, damage has been minimal at this point,” he said.

Clark County Public Schools announced in a social media post late Sunday that due to the flooding that three bus routes would be canceled for the first day of the spring semester. Affected families did have the option of having their students picked up at an alternative location.
