“I’m most pleased with their unselfishness. Guys can see the big picture, and think of something bigger than themselves,” Cards’ Coach Josh Cook said.

In what has been an interesting week for Boys Basketball at George Rogers Clark High School for more reasons than one, an offensive explosion took center stage.

The Cards improved their record to 15-1 and continue to stand as the top team in the 10th Region following a 94-46 victory against Bourbon County last Tuesday and a 99-51 victory over Montgomery County on Saturday.

“I think we’re shooting the three-point shot very consistently,” Cards’ Coach Josh Cook said.

In the former matchup against the Bourbon County Colonels, they were able to shoot 48.7 % from behind the three-point line, though a 50% field goal percentage in total made them an offensive force to be reckoned with.

A few days later, against the Montgomery County Indians in Mt. Sterling, they were able to shoot over
30% from the free throw line with an impressive 65.6 % total field goal percentage.

Sophomore Reshaun Hampton, who led the team in scoring with 23 points against Bourbon County, made 10 of 12 three-pointers across both outings.

“We believe in him as a shooter, and we believe in him as a defender,” Coach Cook stated. “He’ll work to keep improving, and he wants to fulfill his role this season to the best of his ability.”

Defensively, the team was not without its successes as both games were decided early. Bourbon County was held to just 36% shooting for the evening, and Montgomery County tallied only slightly better.

“I think our pressure’s been really good, we’ve been able to have a lot of steals and cause a lot of turnovers. [Our players] have been extremely active, and what that does is allow for some fast breaks on the end,” Cook said.

In both of their games, the Cards have seen a surplus of talent hit the basketball court.
Eight total players found their way to the basket against the Colonels, while ten were able to put up points against the Indians.

“We’re obviously playing a little more depth lately. Our margin of victory we think is very strong,” Cook said. “I just think the opportunity to get out and get more guys involved will help create a lot more opportunities.”

Strong offensive and defensive play certainly weren’t the only storyline to come out of this week.

The team had a scheduled Saturday game in the Martin Luther King Jr. Classic canceled, as well as a Tuesday matchup delayed.

They’ll also begin a long road trip with three games against Paris on Friday, Bryan Station on Saturday, and Bourbon County on Tuesday of next week before returning to Winchester the week after.

With the regular season just about half way compete, however, the Cardinals look to be in a positive position.
