Habitat For Humanity of Madison and Clark Counties will host a home dedication for Jamie Skinner and her daughter, Trentity, the organization announced in a news release.

The dedication will be Saturday at 2 p.m. on Lincoln Street in Winchester. It was previously scheduled for Jan. 8 but was rescheduled due to inclement weather.

The home has been a long time coming for the Skinners.

“Jamie works hard as an administrative assistant, but as a single mom, she is having a difficult time getting ahead. When she and Trentity lived in an apartment, the cost of their basic needs, like rent, utilities, and groceries, outweighed her income,” said Amanda Dube, the organization’s fund development coordinator.

Dube said that Jamie Skinner wanted a better life for her and Trenity, but growing debt seemed never to let them get ahead. As a result, Jamie had to make some tough choices.

“She moved her family out of their apartment and into her father’s home, where she and Trentity now share a room. It’s crowded, and they miss having their privacy, but they are grateful for the opportunity it has given them to become debt-free and begin saving for a bright future,” Dube said.

Habitat homeowners must work on other home builds as part of the program’s requirements or volunteer in different ways. Skinner volunteered over 350 hours of her time in addition to attending classes that will make her a better homeowner.

The Skinners home is part of a partnership called “Faith Builds” between Thrivent Financial, a faith-based financial non-profit, and 12 Winchester churches.

“At Thrivent, our mission is to first help people to be wise with their money and thrive with purpose. Through our work, we hope to inspire generosity. It’s an honor to partner with an organization like Habitat that allows people to impact the lives of others through generosity and service,” said Rachel Hooker, a Thrivent financial advisor, in the news release.

The dedication is the latest home to go up on Lincoln Street. Habitat and the city of Winchester have partnered to build six affordable houses with the hope of revitalizing the area.
