Competitive swimming is a tough sport, but the Cards never hesitated to dive into the fast lane all season.

Recently, George Rogers Clark competed in the Kentucky High School Athletic Association State Swimming Championships between February 18-19 at the Lancaster Aquatics Center at the University of Kentucky.

“The state meet is always a quick turnaround after Regionals,” said Cards’ Coach Ashleigh Richardson. “Everyone tapers for the regional meet and then you get two more weeks in the water and then we have the state meet. It is hard to get personal bests when you just gave it your all two weeks prior to just qualify for the state meet.”

Libby Taylor finished 36th in the 200-yard individual medley and the girls 200-yard free relay finished 31st with a second drop off of their best time. None of the four girls that attended the state meet had ever been before.

“With an eighth grader, two freshmen, and a junior, it was a great experience for them and gives them something to work towards for next year,” Richardson said.

Richardson praised the team that never hesitated to do their best.

“Overall, I am very pleased with the way the season went,” she said. “My goal was to have either an individual or a relay qualify for the state meet and we ended up having both. I was very proud of everyone’s hard work in and out of the water. Hopefully, a lot of the swimmers will return next season and we will get a few more seventh graders. Being the coach at the country club in the summer, I am able to recruit them for high school swimming once they hit seventh grade.”

Cards are making a name for themselves.

“As a first year coach, I think the season went well and GRC is beginning to make their name in Region 8,” Richardson said. “Throughout the season during our meets, a majority of swimmers dropped time at every meet. As a coach, that is all that you can ask for.”
