Pageturner’s Book Group meets at the Library, Monday, April 25, 11 AM.

The book under discussion will be “One by One” by Ruth Ware.

In “One-by-One,” the cofounder of Snoop, a trendy London-based tech start-up, organizes a weeklong trip in the French Alps for his team. It starts out like any other corporate retreat: PowerPoint presentations and strategy sessions broken up by mandatory bonding on the slopes.

Then a shareholder upends the agenda by pushing a lucrative but contentious buyout offer.

Tensions simmer, loyalties are tested. The storm brewing inside the chalet is no match for the one outside, however, and a devastating avalanche leaves the group cut off from all access to the outside world. Even worse, one Snooper hadn’t made it back from the slopes when the avalanche hit.

As hours pass without signs of rescue, panic mounts, the chalet grows colder, and the group dwindles…one by one. Yipes!

The Academy of American Poets, launched National Poetry Month in April 1996 to celebrate the integral roles poets play in our culture, and to emphasize that poetry is a treat. It has become the largest literary celebration in the world, with tens of millions of readers, students, K–12 teachers, librarians, booksellers, literary events curators, publishers, families, and—of course—poets, marking poetry’s importance for our lives.

The Library has an eclectic collection of Kentucky, classic, contemporary, US, and world poetry
(call #’s 811-895). Spend some time in April browsing through it. Poetry is like any other writing: a lot doesn’t speak, but finding the right book is joy.

Thursday, April 28, Poem-in-Your-Pocket Day, the Library will give away poems by local poets.

Feel free to ask for more than one.

If you write poetry and would like to display a poem in the Library during April, bring in a copy or email a file to jrmaruskin@clarkbooks.org . I’ll frame it and display it in the Library’s reading area.
