The Winchester cleanup will be one of 16 events that the organization will host with different local partners across the central Kentucky area during April.

“Earth Month is a great opportunity for communities to come together and help their local environment,” the organization’s executive director, Amy Sohner, said in the release.

The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970 and has evolved into a yearly effort organized by EarthDay.org to improve and spread ecological conscientiousness about the planet.

Past cleanups organized by Bluegrass Greensource have been successful, according to the statement.

“Bluegrass Greensource has worked with numerous community groups on litter cleanups and helped collect over 150,000 bags of trash and recycle an additional 1,500 tons,” it reads.

The release says there will be COVID-19 related safety measures for each cleanup.

Main Street Clean Sweep is presented in partnership with the following organizations: Commonwealth Credit Union, Ale-8-One, Lexington Pavement Sweep, PNC Bank, and Bechtel Parsons Blue Grass.

Bluegrass Greensource is a non-profit organization founded in 2001 that provides education and resources on how Kentuckians affect the environment. More information can be found on the non-profit’s website at www.bggreensource.org.
