For anyone with local landscaping, plant or hardscaping needs Hatton Landscaping might be the best kept secret in Clark County.
The garden center, located off Cabin Creek Road has been run by William and Linda Hatton since 1998. The couple got into the mowing business in 1977.
“Planting trees and bushes, and landscaping design,” Linda Hatton said about the landscaping services they offer. “We do cleanup, maintenance, trimming, mulching.”
The couple’s business partner, Gary Vinegar, handles the landscaping and hardscaping side of the business.
The hardscaping services include the construction benches, firepits, flagstone patios or walkways, retaining walls and pub tables made with precast concrete.
The nursery offers different species of trees, shrubs and flowers.
This year Linda said she wants to highlight a new addition to their stock: encore azaleas
“They are called rebloomers. They bloom in spring, summer and fall. They like six hours of sun, at least, a day,” she said.
The Hattons like to think of themselves as the last true garden center in Clark County.
“There is no other garden center where you can come to get information–correct information–about plants,” Linda Hatton said.
Only plants that will thrive in Kentucky’s often topsy-turvy climate are stocked and sold.
The garden center is located on the same property that William built the couple’s house back in the 1970s and the couple’s home doubles as their office. It is open seasonally.
“We are from spring to late, late fall–it depends on the weather,” Linda Hatton said. “We close up the greenhouses and then William will peel the plastic back in May as soon as it starts warming up.”
Just a note, don’t expect plastic as payment to the garden center.
“We are old school, we use no credit or debit cards,” Linda Hatton said. “I don’t want to pass that percentage on to customers that aren’t using them.”
The Hattons accept cash or a personal check–a rarity in today’s world, and if a customer needs to to get cash the Hattons are happy to hold their items until they return.
The garden center is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. It is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday and Saturday.
