After a successful year by many definitions, both the boys’ and girls’ tennis teams saw their seasons come to a close this week at the KHSAA State Tennis Championships in Lexington and Nicholasville.

In a matchup on Tuesday the Lady Cardinals team of freshman Maddie Settles and Cassi Lowe took on Sacred Heart’s Stella Campbell and Natalie Wagner. Unfortunately, the doubles duo fell in two consecutive sets by scores of 1-6 and 2-6. They ended their season as the #1 seed in the 10th Region, an improbable but exciting feat when taking into account the fact that both athletes were relatively new to the game.

On the boys’ side, junior Tennyson Prater competed hard against Nathan Lawson of DeSalle High School. Despite a strong effort, Prater lost in a match that saw the two sets decided by narrow margins, 3-5 and 5-7, defeats.

Prater ended his season as a competitor in the state tournament for the third consecutive year, overcoming several injuries throughout the season.

Next season, all three competitors will return in Cardinal red. Along with a slew of other talents, they look to continue taking GRC tennis to the next level.
