Starting this Saturday and extending to July 2, the 2022 Clark County Fair will offer plenty for area citizens to do.

However, some may be cautious remembering last year’s event – in which an individual suffered a non life-threatening wound.

“Basically, two groups of juveniles out of Bourbon County ended up in a minor shooting” said Clark County Sheriff Berl Perdue. “I think there was one guy running away, was shooting to ward them off, and [he] got shot in the leg.”

This year, safety measures will continue to be taken, as local law enforcement recalls the incident.

For example, while three or four deputies have previously worked during the middle portion of the week, those numbers will increase. Not to mention, at least 12 deputies will continue working the fair over the weekend.

“I know we’re going to beef up our presence,” said Perdue. “We’ll be there from the time they open the gates until the end of the night.”

This is especially the case beginning on Tuesday, when carnival rides open up.

Among security duties, deputies and other officers will also direct traffic in a safe and orderly manner.

And, while it might be unwise to guarantee that nothing could potentially take place, last year’s encounter at the fair was unusual for Winchester.

“I’ve been Sheriff almost 16 years now, and honestly we have very, very few problems out there,” Perdue emphasized. “Every now and then you might have an intoxicated person or something like that, [but] it’s always been pretty well behaved. Last year was an anomaly. Normally, it’s very safe here.”
