Saturday will be a special day for the Rogers family of Winchester as they officially dedicate their forever home on Lincoln Street.

At 10 a.m. Habitat for Humanity of Madison and Clark Counties will officially hand over house keys to the family of Andy and Ken Rogers. The couple have three children: Kenneth, Nikolas and Railynn.

The event will include speeches, prayers and a special performance by students from Shearer Elementary School.

Families who qualify for Habitat homes are required to attend homeownership courses and have to volunteer over 300 hours with the organization.

The Rogers have gone above and beyond when it comes to what Habitat calls “sweat equity.”

“They are a very hardworking family and they have a strong faith and work ethic. They have put in so many hours to volunteer for Habitat,” said Amanda Dube, the organization’s interim executive director. “One thing I can say is that when it comes to sweet equity our homeowner’s put in around 350 hours before they move into their home. The Rogers family put in their 350 hours before we broke ground on their home.”

And even when they reached that mark, the Rogers continued to volunteer.

Andy was featured in the Sun’s 2021 edition of “Progress” and said that she regularly volunteered around 20-25 hours a week with Habitat.

“I’ve done everything from painting porches to laying floors. There is no job too big and no job too small,” Rogers said in the article. “My sweat equity is time for me to go out there and do the work to earn my home because Habitat does not give you anything for free. You have to earn everything you get.”

Dube said that Andy was nervous when she started the program but has flourished since then.

“She has really found her voice and she become quite the public speaker now. She will go out with me to events and share her Habitat story and what this Habitat home means for her family,” she said.

And while all Habitat families are easy to root for, it is hard not to want to put forth a little more enthusiasm when rooting for the Rogers family as they being an exciting new chapter in their lives.
