Clark County Public Schools will have a new superintendent when classes resume in August.

The board of education and Dr. Molly McComas announced a tentative “mutual parting” on Tuesday.

The announcement came via a written statement read by board member Sherry Richardson before the start of the monthly regular board meeting.

“The board and Dr. Molly McComas have tentatively reached an agreement for a mutual parting of ways effective immediately. The board thanks Dr. McComas for her service to the district and wishes her the best for her future endeavors,” Richardson read.

McComas, who began her duties last August after being hired in June of 2021, served as superintendent for less than a year. She came to CCPS from Scott County Schools where she worked in the office of student services.

Her tenure did not begin peacefully as the board was divided over the handling of the non-renewal of former superintendent Paul Christy’s contract. McComas and the board would publicly disagree over proposed staffing allocations in the spring and the board bucked McComas by voting to reset allocations to the level seen at the start of the 2021-22 school year instead of proposed reductions. The now former superintendent’s handling of a bus driver “sickout” in April was widely derided by parents on social media.

McComas first annual evaluation was set to be conducted at a special called meeting earlier this month on the 17th. The meeting went into closed session shortly after it was gaveled in and was adjourned with no action taken after it came back into open session.

Another special called meeting occurred before Tuesday’s regularly scheduled one. The meeting went into closed session for a little over an hour and adjourned with no action taken.

The public review of the superintendent’s evaluation was scheduled for Tuesday’s meeting but was removed from the agenda.

The results of the evaluation are still preliminary and will be made public after a board vote at a future meeting.

The board will hold a special called meeting next week, July 5 at 6:30 p.m., and will formally begin the process of finding an interim district head. After that the board will begin the search for its second new superintendent in as many years.

In the meantime, Clark County Director of Pupil Personnel Christy Bush will serve as acting head of the district until the board appoints an interim superintendent.

McComas, Richardson and other board members Brenda Considine, Ashley Ritchie and Bill Taulbee declined to comment for this story. Board chair Megan Hendricks attended the meeting virtually and was not asked for comment by the Sun.
