The search is on to fill a seat on the Clark County Public Schools (CCPS) Board of Education.

Board member Brenda Considine confirmed in an email to the Sun that she resigned her seat effective Thursday but declined to provide any further comment.

Considine was elected to the board of education in 2020 and previously served as a teacher, elementary school principal, and chief academic officer for CCPS in a career that spanned over 30 years.

Board chair Megan Hendricks provided a written statement on Considine’s resignation.

“I am thankful for Ms. Consinine’s time on the board and her willingness to serve the district in that capacity. Her experience and input was invaluable and will be missed. We are all thankful for her service over the years to the district. I wish her the best and hope she enjoys her retirement,” Hendricks wrote.

So what happens now?

The process for replacing Considine is laid out in KRS 160.190. The board has sixty days to fill her seat with a majority vote, but before that must solicit open applications for two weeks within 30 days after the vacancy.

Any applicant must file a letter of intent with the board affirming that they meet the specifications to serve and that they have the equivalent of a 12th-grade education.

If the board cannot reach a consensus within 60 days, then the state’s chief academic officer will make the appointment within 60 days.

Who is eligible to serve?

According to KRS 160.180, to be eligible to serve on a Kentucky school board, a person must be 24 years old, a Kentucky resident, a school district resident for at least three years, and have the equivalent of a 12th-grade education.

One cannot serve on a school board under state law and: hold any other elected office, have previously been removed from a school board, have a relative employed by the school district, or be a vendor of supplies or services to the school district.
