Mary Jo Mahan passed away on Monday July 11, 2022, in Lexington of complications from a stroke. Born November 12, 1932, she was the daughter of James Waller Bean and Anna Mary Cox Bean. A native of Clark County, she attended The Training School at Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College (Model High), and graduated from Winchester High School and Crump Commerce Business College (later known as KY Business College). She was Director and teacher of the Early Childhood Development Center for Handicapped Children and also worked with Hospice East in later years. She was an 8th generation member of First Presbyterian Church, serving in many capacities including, Elder, Deacon and numerous committees over the years. Her hobbies included painting, antiques, embroidery, golf and gardening. Her expertise with herbs brought state-wide recognition. She was a member of Little Garden Club, Fortnightly Club and Winchester Fine Arts Club. She is survived by her sons James Coleman (Sally) Mahan of Vero Beach, FL and George Barton Mahan of Lexington, Grandchildren Jennifer Paige Adkins, Paxton Carle (Lisa) Mahan of Winchester, Meredith Rae Mahan of Naples, FL, Mattison Waller Mahan of Bonita Springs, FL, Myles Coleman (Jamie) Mahan of Louisville, KY and Michael Cyril (Jessica) Mahan of Nashville, TN, Great-Grandchildren Brookelyn Paige Akins, Bailey Elizabeth Adkins and Brendyn Curtis Mahan White, of Winchester, Ryland Mattison Mahan of Naples, FL, Grace Cole Mahan and Brady Kraemer Mahan of Louisville, KY. She was days away from the birth of her 7th great-grandchild in Nashville. She is also survived by first cousins Freda Anne Moore of Estero, FL and Josephine Harris of Lexington, KY. A private burial service for the immediate family was held on Saturday, July 16, 2022, at the Richmond Cemetery, Richmond, KY. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
