Clark County Sports Notebook: GRC soccer and volleyball teams off to solid start

The George Rogers Clark boys’ soccer squad split its first four games to open the season.

The Cardinals (2-2) opened the season with a win over the neighboring Madison Central Indians in a high-scoring affair, 5-3, in their season opener on Aug. 11th. Junior forward/midfielder PK Vogel had a hand in all five GRC goals – scoring four and assisting on the other.

The Cards were shut out two days later on the 13th in their home opener against Newport Central Catholic, 2-0.

Two goals from senior striker/midfielder Will Carrington and another from junior striker/midfielder Joby Mittmesser carried the Cards past Harrison County on Tuesday.

The Cards lost 2-1 to Bishop Brossart on Thursday.

GRC began a three-game homestand on Saturday with a 2-0 win over Russell, followed by a 1-1 draw against Pulaski County on Sunday.

They then have a Tuesday grudge match against the rival Montgomery County Indians.

GRC Girls’ Soccer

The GRC Lady Cardinals are off to a 4-2 start.

The Lady Cards downed Tates Creek 4-1 in their season opener on Aug. 8th behind two goals from sophomore forward Reese Patrick and senior forward Ciana Araya, who also assisted on one goal. Sophomore midfielder Ella Vanhooser collected two assists of her own.

Tates Creek met defeat against GRC on the 12th, with the Lady Cards winning a 2-1 contest. Araya and Reese collected a goal apiece, with Vanhooser notching another assist.

GRC made it three wins in a row with a 3-2 victory over Dunbar on the 13th, thanks to goals from Reese, Makili Tabor, and Madison Stapleton. Araya and Vanhooser assisted on a goal apiece.

The Lady Cards suffered their first defeat later that day, 3-0, against Campbell County.

Their next outing on the pitch was a 2-1 loss on Friday against Loveland (OH) in which Reese found the back of the net once again.

On Saturday, the Lady Cards rebounded against Russell with a 2-0 win. Araya netted another goal and sophomore Laney Frazier scored her first goal of the season. Reese assisted on one goal.

Volleyball

The Lady Cardinals kicked off their campaign on Monday with a straight sweep of Robertson County in three games, 25-12, 25-1 and 25-11.

GRC moved to 2-0 with another straight sweep, this time of neighboring Estill County, in three games, 25-10, 25-8 and 25-5.

The Lady Cards (2-0) have gotten 50 assists from junior Kelsey McKeehan to begin the year.

The team has recorded 33 service aces. McKeehan leads in the category with 11.

Juniors Kamryn Toler and Laura Anderson lead the Lady Cards with 19 digs apiece. The team has produced a combined 100 through two games.

The Lady Cards will be in action again Tuesday against Paris.
