Cards and Lady Cards compete well against top teams in out-of-state tourneys

The Cards and Lady Cards both found themselves out of Kentucky the week after Christmas.

The Cards participated in the Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Coming off a two-game losing streak to end the King of the Bluegrass Tournament, the Cards found their winning ways on Wednesday with an 83-69 victory over Socastee (SC).

Jerone Morton led the way with 20 points.

Three other Cards – Sam Parrish, Trent Edwards, and Tyleik Maxwell – also scored double figures with 18, 17, and 12 points.

On Thursday, the Cards returned to face off against Dorman (SC), a top-ranked team in South Carolina and the only team to defeat GRC last season.

Despite a rally, the Cards fell by a 71-62 score.

Jerone Morton (24) and Trent Edwards (22) each scored over 20 points, while Sam Parrish (10) also met double figures.

On Friday, the Cards concluded their run in the Beach Ball Classic with a 66-60 defeat against highly-touted Tampa Catholic.

Kareem Guerrant started ahead of the injured Tyleik Maxwell.

Jerone Morton led the way with 18 points, while Trent Edwards contributed 15 and Sam Parrish added 14.

The Lady Cards also went 1-2 on their road trip at the Tampa Bay Christmas Invitational, playing some highly-ranked foes throughout the process.

Against Miami Country Day on Wednesday, the Cards put up a fight but fell by a 56-45 score. Ciara Byars led the way offensively with 16 points, while Kennedy Stamper had eight of her own.

Two days later, the Lady Cards faced nationally-ranked Example Academy (IL). Against a squad that consisted of several future Division 1 athletes, the Lady Cards lost by the narrowest of margins in a 46-45 defeat. The Eagles hit a game-winning free throw with just one second remaining. Ciara Byars and Trinity Gay led the way with 20 and 10 points.

To conclude their road trip, the Lady Cards came out victorious in a matchup against Penn Charter (PA). They officially ended 2022 with a 44-37 win.

On Tuesday, the Cards and Lady Cards will start 2023 with their 40th District opener.

At Paris, the Lady Cards (8-3) take on the Lady Hounds (10-3) at 6:00 p.m. The Cards (7-4) follow with an 8:00 p.m. against the Greyhounds (6-8).
