Actor Michael Jones will present “Col. Charles Young: Bridge Builder on Friday, Feb. 10 at Holly Roode on Beckner Street. The program is sponsored by the Winchester Black History & Heritage Committee and the Clark County/Winchester Heritage Commission.

Classic comedy

On Tuesday, February 14th, at 6:00 p.m., Ron Kibbey’s Comedy Classic featuring hilarious old movies and vintage cartoons returns to the Clark County Public Library. Two films from Hal Roach Studios featuring ZaSu Pitts will be featured.

The first, a comedy short from 1931, starts Pitts and Thelma Todd (akin to Laurel and Hardy) as two young women seeking dates that don’t take them to Coney Island. Eventually, they meet two wealthy Englishmen who ask them out – this could be it!

The second is a feature film from 1941 titled “Niagara Falls” that stars Pitts and Slim Summerville as a recently married couple following a twenty year engagement, who are on their dream honeymoon at Niagara Falls. After meeting a couple on the side of the road having car trouble, Sam (Summerville) mistakenly believes the couple is married and having a lovers’ spat. His efforts to help the couple impact his honeymoon with Emmy (Pitts). The program begins with Popeye and Olive Oyl on a date! Romance is in the air!! Popcorn and drinks will be provided.

Valentine’s Day

A Sweetheart Candlelight Dinner on the Kentucky River takes place on Tuesday, February 14th, at Waterfront Grill and Gathering at 220 Athens Boonesboro Road. The event is from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and will serve as a fundraiser-friendraiser for the Kentucky RiverKEEPER. Singles and families are welcome! Wine glasses have been hand painted for the occasion as individual celebrate the season. To make reservations, call 859-595-6003.

Habitat for Humanity

Due to predicted weather conditions, an original groundbreaking date was postponed. Fortunately, a new date has been set! On February 16th at 8:00 a.m., a Chamber Breakfast and Habitat for Humanity Groundbreaking event will take place at 32 Lincoln Street. Plus, the home next door will be complete, thereby allowing individuals to take a tour of the first two story home. All are welcome to kick off the last Habitat home in phase one of Lincoln Street Renewal!

Legacy Grove 

Through February 16th, a Bird Art Scavenger Challenge that’s both nature trail and self-guided takes place. Discover bird art and learn more about our feathered friends! Follow Legacy Grove on Facebook for the online challenge or pick up a scavenger hunt flyer at one of Legacy Grove’s Nature Trail entrances.

From February 17th through the 20th, enjoy the Great Backyard Bird Count. Learn more at www.birdcount.org. We encourage the public to participate at home!

On February 22nd, the Legacy Grove Winter Drum Circle takes place from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The location is 11 S. Main Street in Winchester, KY. All ages and abilities are welcome. Bring your own drum and use one we provide!

Habitat groundbreaking

Habitat for Humanity of Madison and Clark Counties and the Winchester-Clark County Chamber of Commerce are hosting a groundbreaking for the Short family at 32 Lincoln Street on Thursday, Feb. 19, at 8 a.m.

Book club

Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 6 p.m. at the Clark County Public Library the evening book club returns. The group will be reading “The Final Solution” by Michael Chabon. The novel is a story of detection featuring a retired Sherlock Holmes. Copies of the book are available at the front desk at the Clark County Public Library.

Volunteers needed

Volunteers are needed for the Truth and Consequences on March 24. This is an enrichment event for 9th grade students at George Rogers Clark High School where students will be given a scenario related to substance use. Students will visit three or more community agencies or officials to learn what could happen if these scenarios happened to them. Students will also experience supplemental educational opportunities throughout the day. The purpose of the event is to open the conversation about substance use in our community in an effort to prevent future issues. This event is presented by Clark County Cooperative Extension in collaboration with Youth Service Center Coordinator at GRC.

This is an all-day event beginning at 8 a.m. The day is broken into two parts, morning and afternoon, so you can still volunteer for a portion of the day. Lunch will be provided.

Car show

Winchester’s 1st Annual Downtown Hot Rod Festival, put on by Holder Entertainment and Remember When Cruiserz, is coming to Main Street.

The event will take place on April 28th from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Depot Street only, and on April 29th from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. It will also last on April 30th from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Awards will be given out at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. Vendor spots are available, and there will be live music on the Clark County Courthouse steps on Saturday night!

Dash plaques will be awarded to the first 100 registered vehicles. Awards include the Mayor’s Choice, City Manager’s Choice, City Commissioner’s Choice of Rat Rod, Motorcycle, and Lowrider, Furthest Traveled Award, Club Participation – 1st, 2nd, 3rd Pin Ups Choice.

Inflatables will be present for kids. There will also be 50/50 winners and raffles!

Summer public safety presentation

From 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Jul. 31, a Winchester Public Safety Presentation will take place at the Winchester Elks Club. The address is 255 Shoppers Drive. Light refreshments will be provided as Winchester Sheriff Berl Perdue, Police Chief James Hall, and Jailer Frank Doyle provide a community update and state their goals for each office in 2023. New ministry

A Blessing Hands Outreach Ministry has been started at Broadway Missionary Baptist Church, located at 121 West Broadway. The goal is to help those in need within the community. For those who would like to donate, please contact Michael Clemens at 859-556-3025.
