The last week of the regular season for George Rogers Clark boys and girls basketball was a slam dunk.

Last Tuesday, the Lady Cards (21-7) came out victorious in their home finale, 56-35, in a rematch against Notre Dame, whom they had previously defeated 54-42 in a December matchup.

Brianna Byars led the way with 21 points, while Kennedy Stamper and Ciara Byars also entered double figures with ten points, respectively.

Other scorers for the Lady Cards included Anaya Chestnut, Jaylynn Goodwin, Madelyn Settles, and Trinity Gay.

The Lady Cards were led in rebounds by Ciara Byars (8) and Brianna Byars (7).

The latter, a 2,000-plus point scorer for the Lady Cards, was playing her last game at GRC Arena along with seniors Trinity Gay and Brook Taylor.

Two days later, the Lady Cards concluded their season with a 60-44 victory against Louisville Central.

The game was close throughout, with GRC finishing via a strong fourth quarter.

Ciara Byars had 25 points in the game, while Brianna Byars (13) and Kennedy Stamper (10) also contributed double figures.

Other scorers for the Lady Cards included Anaya Chestnut, Trinity Gay, and Makili Tabor.

Finishing her night with a double-double, Ciara Byars led the team with 15 rebounds.

The Lady Cards conclude their season with a 21-7 record, going undefeated in the 40th District and 10th Region play.

Boys roll into postseason as state title defense dawns

The Cards’ (22-5) last week of the regular season progressed along similar lines as they won both games convincingly.

Last Tuesday night, the boys found themselves in Brooksville to play the Bracken County Polar Bears.

Against last year’s 10th Region finalist, the Cards built an early lead and never looked back.

They went on to win 83-45 in a game that saw Jerone Morton finish with 28 points, 24 of them over the first three quarters.

Trent Edwards (16) and Sam Parrish (13) added double figures.

Other scorers include Tyleik Maxwell, Reshaun Hampton, Eli Craig, Kareem Guerrant, JP Gaines, and Montez Gay – his first at the varsity level.

Hampton led the Cards with eight rebounds.

They played their home and regular-season finale on Thursday night against Scott County.

Despite an early challenge, the Cards moved on to a convincing 80-56 win.

Perhaps fittingly, 2,000+ point shooter Jerone Morton led the Cards with 19 points while Edwards (16), Hampton (15), and Parrish (12) each registered double figures.

Tyleik Maxwell, Eli Craig, JP Gaines, and Kamden McAlpin also scored.

The team was led in rebounds by Parrish.

The girls begin play on Monday at 6 p.m.

The boys will tip off at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
