Much is afoot on Lincoln Street in Winchester.

A week after holding a groundbreaking ceremony for one home, Habitat for Humanity of Madison and Clark Counties will host a home dedication for another this Saturday at 1 p.m.

The lucky family is Brittany Berry and her five children: Aaliyah, Emmanuel, Jaylen, Journee and Kenyon.

Construction on the home – located at 44 Lincoln Street – began last May.

“I felt like it was a really good opportunity for me and my family, and for there to be a good foundation for my kids to grow up in,” Berry said in a previous interview with the Sun. “We get to own our own home and do not have to go through anybody.”

Central Kentucky realty firm Re/MAX Creative has sponsored the build.

“Owning a home is a feeling of accomplishment,” said the firm’s broker, Janice Mueller, at the Berry home’s groundbreaking last year. “Not every person is able to own a home. Only 61 percent of Americans own a home.

Sponsoring a build has been a goal of Mueller’s for a long time.

“It’s what we do for a living is help people achieve their American dream, and it has always been a goal of mine to build a house for Habitat,” she said.

Qualifying for and participating in Habitat’s homeowner program takes a lot of work.

Participants are required to undergo a rigorous screening process before they qualify. After that, they are required to attend financial literacy courses and put in over 300 hours of volunteer labor at other build sites.

Habitat homeowners are not gifted the house either; they take out a mortgage and pay property taxes like any other homeowner.

The process has been worth it for Berry.

“I’ve learned to be able to work together. It has been a wonderful opportunity, and everybody has been so nice,” Berry said last year.
