As it has for the last 20 or so years, the Clark County Fish and Game Club will hold its annual Youth Fish Day this Saturday.

The free event is for youngsters aged 15 and under and will last from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the clubhouse located at 1255 Waterworks Road.

“We provide a fishing rod, bait, tackle and everything,” said Stephanie Brock, a member of the club’s board of directors. “Parents will need to bring a kid who wants to fish…At noon we provide lunch.”

After lunch, the club will hold a raffle to give away gift cards and fishing gear.

The day’s fish will be blue gill, which has no permit limit and can even be taken home.

“They’ll need to bring something to take them home in!” Brock advised for any young angler that wants to keep their fishy friend.

The same advice goes for any other species of fish that may be caught except for one.

“Bass over 14 inches are catch-and-release only,” Brock said.

The club started the event to give back to the community and to foster a love of fishing.

There are many benefits to the activity, according to Brock.

Fishing teaches kids skills. Like patience and concentration, among other things. It’s also a great way for parents to spend quality time with their kids,” she said.

Plus, it keeps children from adopting a sedentary lifestyle.

“It is something that gets them outside instead of being indoors and on a tablet or whatever. It is a good way to get a kid outside and engaged in something different,” Brock said.
