As a multi-sport athlete, Tyleik Maxwell has made a name for himself at George Rogers Clark High School.

However, football will be where his future lies.

The senior, who led the team in touchdown passes this season, will take his talents to Richmond this fall as he signed a National Letter of Intent to play football at Eastern Kentucky University.

“This is great, being able to go and play at the next level,” said Maxwell.

In his final season with the Cardinals, Maxwell accumulated 1059 passing yards and 13 touchdown passes in eleven games, including 495 over the first four contests, as GRC got off to a fast, 4-0 start. He also rushed 75 times for 424 yards and six touchdowns.

Later in the season, as junior James-Michael Davis saw more snaps from the quarterback position, Maxwell was used as a receiver and finished with eight receptions for 131 yards and three touchdowns.

His versatility paid off most in a playoff game against Tates Creek.

Late in the first half, with pressure from several Commodore defenders coming his way, Maxwell spun away and out of potential tackles.

He then threw a 70-yard touchdown pass to Joey Hill, completing one of the most athletic plays of the season.

The Colonels of EKU took notice of Maxwell’s versatile capabilities.

For the last two years, Maxwell has played under the system of Head Coach Joe Chirico, who previously won a state championship at Paintsville.

“He’s been great,” Maxwell said. “He’s taught me how to be a leader [and] how to play my hardest every day.”

As a player with the George Rogers Clark High School basketball team that won four straight 10th Region championships and a state championship in 2022, Maxwell believes championship experience will help him.

“I know that in hard times you have to have toughness,” he said. “You just always have to keep your energy.”

Leadership lessons from time spent at George Rogers Clark High School are beneficial too.

“I learned a lot of leadership and to play with different types of people,” Maxwell said.

With that, Maxwell – surrounded by family and friends – officially signed his scholarship to be the Colonels’ next student-athlete.

It’s in a sport he says he’s found something special.

“I just love the brotherhood, and I just love the way everybody comes together,” Maxwell added.
