Following a successful spring and early summer, the tennis season for the GRC Cards and Lady Cards concluded in respectable fashion last week at the 2023 KHSAA Boys and Girls State Championships.
After solid showings throughout the season and 10th Region Tournament play, the doubles duo of Madelyn Settles and Cassi Lowe, and Tennyson Prater and Clay Turley made it to the state competition.
At the University of Kentucky, Settles and Lowe squared off first against the tandem of Rachel Davidson and Elly Rader from Clay County High School.
The girls won in consecutive sets by scores of 6-0 and 6-2.
From there, they advanced to the Round of 32, hoping to make it to the Sweet 16.
Despite a valiant showing, Settles and Lowe fell to Notre Dame Academy’s veteran team of Hailey Fullenkamp and Taylor Meenach.
While losing the first set 6-3, the girls narrowly came up short in a tiebreaker in the second set.
Both sophomores, Settles and Lowe, are expected to return next season following their second consecutive trip to the state tournament.
At Top Seed Tennis Club in Nicholasville, the boys’ doubles duo of Tennyson Prater and Clay Turley competed.
While there, they, too, made it past the Round of 64 as they defeated the duo of Alex McMillan and Nolan Waller from Paducah Tilghman High School.
In two sets, the scores were 6-3 and 6-0.
However, one round later, their seasons would come to a close.
Prater and Turley fell to St. Xavier’s duo of Cole Riley and Walker Bush by scores of 6-0 and 6-1.
As a senior during the past year, Prater finished his play at George Rogers Clark High School.
Turley, a junior, is expected to return.
