Severe storms powered across central Kentucky Sunday evening, leaving several thousand people in the dark, but Winchester and Clark County were spared the damage found in neighboring counties.
Clark County Emergency Management said it had not received any reports of widespread damage as of Monday morning.
The area was under a tornado watch for most of Sunday afternoon and evening. The National Weather Service office in Louisville placed Clark County under a severe thunderstorm warning late Sunday night as storm cells rolled across the area. High winds, frequent lightning and large hail were the primary threats accompanying them.
Nearby Madison County took the brunt of the storm that moved through portions of Clark County. The Richmond Register reported several incidents of wind and hail damage, including a fence being blown over at Eastern Kentucky University’s Roy Kidd Stadium, and pockets of power outages.
Numerous other media outlets around the region reported that tens of thousands of utility customers were without power Monday morning. Bluegrass Energy Cooperative stated that over 18,000 customers were without power at one point last Sunday night in Franklin and Jessamine counties.
Forecasts call for calmer weather early this week, with highs in the 80s and slight precipitation chances.
