2023 Labor Day Queen candidates, other parade royalty announced

The Winchester Labor Day Committee has announced the royal court members for this coming Monday’s parade.

The 2023 Labor Day Queen will be crowned at 11:45 a.m. Monday on the front steps of Broadway Missionary Baptist Church, located at 121 W. Broadway Street.

The candidates for Labor Day Queen are as follows: Trinidy Clark, Evon Gantt, Aziyan Mundy-Lloyd, Ke’Onna Smith and Jontashia Sullivan.

Clark is 17 years old and is a junior at George Rogers Clark High School (GRC). She is the daughter of Cherl Spivey and Cedric Clark. In her spare time, Clark enjoys doing hair and makeup in preparation for attending cosmetology school.

Gantt is 16 years old and attends GRC. She is the daughter of Tim and Misty Lewis. In her spare time, Gantt enjoys doing makeup and nails.

Mundy-Lloyd is 16 years old and is a junior at GRC. She is the daughter of McKeon Mundy. In her spare time, Mundy-Lloyd loves to dance and meet new people. Her goal is to become an orthopedic surgeon.

Smith is 16 years old and is a senior at GRC. She is the daughter of Shonna Smith, and Leshonda Lyle-Sullivan and Jonathon Sullivan. In her spare time, Smith enjoys being creative and loves to paint.

Sullivan is 17 years old and is a senior at GRC. She is the daughter of Leshonda Lyle-Sullivan and Jonathon Sullivan. In her spare time, Sullivan enjoys cooking and doing gymnastics.

The 2023 Labor Day Junior Queen is 11-year-old Kyleigh La’Shea Hampton. She attends Robert D. Campbell Junior High School and is the granddaughter of Marquita Hampton.

The 2023 Labor Day Little Prince is 6-year-old Champ O’Brien Chenault. He attends Conkwright Elementary School and is the grandson of Mary Margaret Miller. Chenault loves to play baseball and football.

The 2023 Labor Day Little Princess is 7-year-old Kelis Winston. She is a student at Conkwright Elementary School and the daughter of Justine Daniel and Darnell Winston. Winston loves to dance, play Roblox and spend time on her iPad.

All Labor Day Queen candidates are required to fill out a written survey that former queens and school teachers examine.

The teachers and former queens also mentor the candidates throughout the weekend.

The Winchester Labor Day Committee stresses that this is not a competition and aims to point the young ladies in a higher direction.

“The candidates are required to come down and volunteer with the children to teach them that it is important to volunteer and give back to your community,” said Sherry Hampton, the committee’s public relations director.

The winner will succeed 2022’s Labor Day Queen, Aaliyah Parker.
