Soccer notebook: GRC boys’ soccer continues to pile on the goals

The George Rogers Clark Cardinals continue to be the hottest team in Region 10.
The 10-4-1 Cards added a trio of recent victories to make it seven of their last eight.
After outscoring their opponents by a combined 30-6 margin coming into last Thursday’s match against Model, GRC had to grind out a 1-0 win over the visitors.
Junior Cole Horn set up fellow junior Ryan Palmer’s winning goal.
The Cards then went on the road and shellacked Paris 10-0, making it the second time the team hit double-digit goals in a match this season. They previously accomplished that feat against Hopkinsville on Sept. 2.
Senior PK Vogel led the Cards’ offensive onslaught with a hat trick. Junior Gratz McCraith and freshman Cedric Hartel each added a brace. Senior Jacob Ebert, junior Hayden Cockrell and sophomore Travis Renner closed out the scoring. Ebert, Cockrell, junior Seth Johnson, sophomore Kevin Baruth and junior Landon Clark each had an assist. Senior Caleb Turley set up two goals himself.
A grudge match with rival Montgomery County closed out the week for GRC and the Cards sent the Indians back down I-64 with a 5-0 defeat.
Turley fired in two goals and had an assist. Cockrell, Johnson and Vogel also found the back of the net. Junior Caleb Bush and Hartel each had an assist.
According to the latest stats from the KHSAA website, Turley currently leads GRC with 15 goals and nine assists. Vogel follows him in both categories with 13 goals and five assists, respectively.
The Cards next take to the pitch on Tuesday, Sept. 19, on the road against North Laurel.
Lady Cards’ down Montgomery Co.
The George Rogers Clark Lady Cardinals’ scored an important rivalry and district win over on Wednesday.
The 4-4-3 Lady Cards defeated Montgomery County 4-1. Stats for the match were not available.
GRC was defeated by East Carter 2-0 in their previous match on Wednesday, Sept. 6.
The Lady Cards play Campbell County on the road Saturday and will visit Lexington Catholic on Monday, Sept. 18.
According to the latest statistics on the KHSAA website, Junior Ella Vanhooser currently leads the team in the goal-scoring category with seven followed by senior Madison Stapleton with six.
Reese Patrick and Lainey Frazier are tied for the team lead in assists with two apiece.
The print edition of this article stated that the Lady Cards would play Paris on Thursday, Sept. 14. That match will instead take place on Tuesday, Sept. 19.
