The Chords for Clark fundraising concert has occurred in Winchester for many years and 2023 will be no different.
On Saturday, Oct. 7, the concert will take place at Leeds Center for the Arts on North Main St., beginning at 7:30 p.m. and ending at approximately 8:30 p.m.
“I think this is [the] seventh one we’ve done,” said Kris Olson, the choir director at George Rogers Clark High School. “We both have our local GRC performers and also some folks from the surrounding area.”
The Chords for Clark Concert is a collaborative effort featuring the GRC Cardinal Singers and The Kentuckians Chorus.
The former, composed of high school students, features an elite group of talented musicians.
“The Cardinal Singers are our auditioned choir at GRC, and they’re a smaller group for that reason,” Olson said. “A lot of responsibility is put on individuals to learn music. It’s also a group that’s asked to perform a lot that means they’re a very busy group. I think it allows for a lot of growth.”
The Kentuckians Chorus, also directed by Olson, is a men’s barbershop quartet.
“They’re a group of guys that, in addition to being connected through me…are also very passionate about choral music education and supporting youth in singing”, Olson added. “It’s a natural partnership that they want to help put on shows like this.”
Like The Cardinal Singers, the Kentuckians Chorus features a capella music.
As best described, a capella is a performance without musical instrumentation.
The Cardinal Singers will also have sections of players – such as bass or alto – divided into groups, each playing different parts, a musical direction known as divisi.
On Saturday, those who attend can expect an eclectic range of music selections – including a German classical piece, spiritual and classic children’s theme song as an opener.
In addition, various styles, such as comedy, will be showcased.
Different choral numbers will also include soloists.
Uniquely, this concert will serve as a fundraiser.
“It’s one of the few times where we’ll actually charge admission for it,” Olson said. “All of the proceeds will go to benefit the choir program at GRC.”
Admission is $15 for adults and $10 for students.
Olson also acknowledged that Chords for Clark is noteworthy.
“This is a really fun night,” he said. “We always love when people come to our concerts, but [with] this one in particular, if it can be described in one word, it’s fun. Everyone who leaves this night will feel really, really good.”
