Having been undefeated at home entering Friday night’s contest against defending Class 6A runner-up Bryan Station, the George Rogers Clark Cardinals hoped to keep the streak coming.
However, it was not to be.
The Cards (3-4) fell to the Defenders (4-3) by a 38-3 score as Bryan Station scored early to gain momentum and late to close out the contest.
“It’s a good team we played. We’ve got to be opportunistic when we [have] chances to make plays,” said George Rogers Clark Head Football Coach Joe Chirico.
Early on, it appeared that – after a long drive by the Defenders – GRC would hold the team to three points.
However, a fake field goal attempt resulted in a 13-yard touchdown run by Bryan Station’s Jordan Hoskins for a 7-0 lead less than four minutes into the contest.
After the Cards’ first offensive position, the team attempted to punt.
However, following a snap that could not be handled, Bryan Station’s Keelan Adams fell on the ball in the endzone to put the Cards in a 14-0 hole with 6:42 remaining in the first half.
The Cards’ defense came up big on the next Bryan Station drive, as sophomore Trey Davis intercepted a pass.
Yet with a stout defense from Bryan Station keeping GRC out of the endzone, the team found the scoreboard twice more in the first half as the offense recovered a fumble of its own in the endzone and John Hannan connected on a 42-yard field goal as time expired for a 24-0 halftime advantage.
GRC’s defense kept Bryan Station out of the endzone for much of the second half – with senior Mahni John thwarting a scoring attempt on an interception in the endzone – and its offense drove into field goal range in the third quarter, culminating in a 33-yard field goal by senior Hayden Cockrell.
However, with touchdown runs of 26 and 6 yards in the fourth quarter by senior Kalen Washington, Bryan Station was able to pull away for good.
The Cards return to action on Friday, October 18, with a 7:30 p.m. matchup against Madison Central (5-2) in Richmond.
