While inclement outdoor weather has created challenges this January, several community members are willing to provide assistance.

Among them is the Winchester Black History and Heritage Committee, which celebrates African Americans and their history throughout Clark County.

The organization—led by volunteers over the last ten years—presented a trio of checks to local organizations to support their efforts during this difficult winter season.

“We’re hoping it inspires someone else to give,” said Winchester Black History and Heritage Committee officer, Linda Rector. “It’s been an especially tough winter for people who don’t have a roof over their heads and for those who are seeking recovery.”

The three organizations to receive donations – each amounting to $1,000 – were New Day Recovery Center, Clark County Homeless Coalition, and The Beacon of Hope Emergency Shelter, Inc.

New Day Recovery Center, an addiction treatment center on Wainscott Avenue featuring a recovery clinic, provides evaluation, intervention, counseling, and more for those struggling with substance use disorder.

Clark County Homeless Coalition, located on W. Lexington Avenue, provides shelter, transitional housing, street outreach, case management, housing assistance programs, adult peer support, SSDI Outreach, Access and Recovery (SOAR), and more.

The Beacon of Hope Emergency Shelter, located on Bypass Road, provides safe shelter, food, and additional resources to approximately 3,000 adults and children annually.

While Lynda Jones Michele Bradford and her crew accepted the donations for New Day Recovery Center and The Beacon of Hope Emergency Shelter, respectively, Amy Horn accepted the donation on behalf of the Clark County Homeless Coalition.

Rector and fellow WBHHC officer Latonia Bell presented them.

Bell also provided some concluding remarks.

“It’s always good to give back when you’re able, and God has blessed us, so it’s good that we were able to do that,” she said.
